Dear PhD Students,
In your calendars, you probably have annotations regarding another important and attractive meeting that represents a milestone in implementing the National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) STER program. As part of the STER program from 2021 to 2023, we are conducting the PUMSTER project to internationalize our Doctoral School. "Summer School 2023" is ahead of us! We have been gradually building up anticipation by sharing the dates and topics of the meetings. Now it's time to provide an overview of our guests' profiles.
Invited Speakers
Piotr Gołkiewicz
Piotr Gołkiewicz, Customer Consultant at Elsevier Life Sciences, Central and Eastern Europe, is a chemist by education and has been supporting researchers, lecturers, and students in their work for many years through training and assistance in using Life Science databases, particularly in the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, and biomedicine. Dr. Daniel Janisz
Dr. Daniel Janisz is a Pediatrician at Cleveland Clinic Children's in Cleveland, Ohio (USA). He completed his residency in 2023 and currently serves as the Chief Resident of the Pediatric Residency Program at Cleveland Clinic Children's. He completed his undergraduate studies in Exercise Science and Spanish at the University of Toledo, received his Master's degree in Biomedical Science from the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences, and completed his Doctor of Medicine degree at the Poznan University of Medical Sciences. His interests include preventive care, complex medical needs, population level medical interventions, as well as medical student and resident education.
Ph.D. Kamil Lisek
Kamil Lisek, Poznan born, Master degree in Experimental Biology at AMU Poznan, PhD in Molecular Biomedicine at University of Trieste with Giannino Del Sal on mutant p53 oncogenic functions in breast cancer. Currently studying the breast cancer initiation and progression with state of art models (mouse, organoid, cell lines) in the lab of Nikolaus Rajewsky at MDC, Berlin using the multiomic approaches. Member of: Italian Society for Cellular Biology and Differentiation - ABCD; German Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology - GBM; European Association for Cancer Research (EACR). Main scientific interests are: signaling pathways, p53, mutant p53, mouse models of cancer, multiomics, spatial transcriptomics, organoids, Wnt, cancer stem cells, tumor plasticity, tumor microenvironment, novel treatment strategies, cancer cell vulnerabilities.
Anna Sokalska, MD, PhD
Dr. Sokalska is the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility specialist at Stanford University, School of Medicine. Her main interests include fertility preservation, oncofertility, in vitro fertilization, intrauterine insemination, and assisted reproduction. She is currently the Director of Fertility Preservation Program and ROSE Biobank at Stanford University. She graduated from Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poland, where she obtained her MD and PhD degrees. Her PhD research was focused on implantation window. After graduating from ob-gyn residency at the same University, she completed research fellowship at Lund University in Sweden and post-doctoral fellowship at University of California, Davis, USA. Subsequently she did residency in ob-gyn and fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA. She authored and co-authored multiple publications, book chapters, and has been a part of many clinical trials relating to her specialty. During her entire carrier she was dedicated to the research and teaching.
Christian Sounders
For almost a decade Christian ran a small English school in Galicia in the north-west of Spain but is now best known for his online presence as Canguro English where his videos about language learning and interviews with language experts have been watched millions of times by hundreds of thousands of teachers and students from all over the world.
Christian is an ambassador for equal access to education through his work with Pencils of Promise, and also fights to end discrimination against non-native speakers of English.
Prof. Marian Rewers
Dr. Rewers joined the faculty of Barbara Davis Center in 2000 as Director of Clinical Division; he has served as interim (2012-14) and now permanent Executive Director of the Center. His primary research is in the etiology/epidemiology of type 1 diabetes as well as insulin resistance and cardiovascular complications of both type 1 and 2 diabetes. Dr. Rewers has been the PI of several large NIH-funded projects: The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY), the Diabetes Autoimmunity Study in the Young (DAISY) and the Genetic and Environmental Causes of Celiac Disease (CEDAR). DAISY has been instrumental in expanding our knowledge of the causes and risks of diabetes. To translate these results to public health and prevention of T1D, Dr. Rewers initiated the Autoimmunity Screening for Kids (ASK) supported by the JDRF and Helmsley Charitable Trust. ASK screens general population children ages 1-18 for presymptomatic T1D and celiac disease, provides education to prevent delayed diagnosis and complications, eg DKA, as well as access to prevention trials. He has also studied the development of cardiovascular disease in T1D in a large longitudinal study – the Coronary Artery Calcification in Type 1 (CACTI). These studies have basic research ‘omics components evaluating the underlying pathophysiology of T1D and its complications as well as clinical translational and epidemiology components providing opportunities for investigation across the spectrum of type 1 diabetes research. Dr. Rewers has authored more than 440 peer-reviewed publications and has mentored over 40 physician-scientists as well as PhD and MS students. He received the Kelly West Award from the American Diabetes Association, one of the highest research awards given by the ADA. More recently, he received the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s prestigious Mary Tyler Moore and S. Robert Levine Award for Excellence in Clinical Research.
Prof. Martin Witt
Martin Witt from the Department of Anatomy at the University of Rostock, Germany, is an outstanding specialist in modern cell and tissue imaging using electron and light microscopy. His research contributes invaluable insights into developing experimental angiology and systematically implementing translational medicine concepts into practice. It is worth emphasizing that Professor Martin Witt is a long-time friend of PUMS (Poznan University of Medical Sciences), and his kindness and tangible support of the activities of Young Scientists have become an integral part of his profile. Prof. Witt has been awarded the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the Poznan University of Medical Sciences.
